– Balance of theory and application – Builds on students’ knowledge of calculus and basic linear algebra in a clear and readable presentation. For a one- or two-term introductory course in discrete mathematics. Resident birds are treated in full detail, with sections on their range and status, description, field characters, voice, general behaviour, food and breeding biology. The author not only provides a clear consistent methodology to help students develop conceptual and quantitative problem-solving skills, but also engages students by using analogies that relate chemistry to everyday life. The text then extends these concepts to systems of particles, rigid bodies (plane motion and 3D), and lightly flexible bodies. The eighth edition marks the first time two central chapters on communication are integrated into one chapter, capturing key principles of both verbal and non-verbal small group behavior within a new definition of communication. It enables teachers to select, develop, and refine formal and informal assessments that relate to the demands of standards-based education and to the diverse needs of every student. By omitting certain sections, instructors can cover the essentials of linear algebra (including eigenvalues and eigenvectors) and introduce applications of linear algebra in a one-semester course. How can we solve it? How can we improve the solution? Some key features of this title include: a conversational, easy-to-follow writing style; many executable code examples that clearly and efficiently illustrate key concepts; extensive use of UML class diagrams to specify problem organization; simple GUI programming early, in an optional standalone graphics track; well-identified alternatives for altering the book’s sequence to fit individual needs; well-developed projects in six different academic disciplines, with a handy summary; and, detailed customizable PowerPointTM lecture slides, with icon-keyed hidden notes. Readers of this text are urged to read and analyze the case stories, not only with an eye to finding educational solutions, but also with a keen awareness of how the strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes, and lingering concerns of each teacher affect their daily performance. Designed to show what research and writing skills can do for ”any” musician, this unique ”single-source” reference features a discussion of musical research, bibliographic tools, guides to print and electronic resources for research, specific research skills, discussion of the process of writing and editing a research paper on a musical topic, and analysis of an article from a musicological journal.
